Russia’s foreign relations and the Baltic Sea region.

There are clear signs that previously warm Russia-EU relations are coming closer to the point of no return. If this development continues, Russia will have to redefine its basic approach to Baltic Sea region. Consequently, this could further increase the tension in the area. Hence, it would be necessary to speed up the smoothening of the relations. One approach would be searching common ground in joint threats and challenges such as environmental issues and cyber-security. In meeting these challenges, Russia’s involvement and active participation in regional mechanisms such as Council of the Baltic Sea States should be given a second chance.
