ReNutriWater project has published its Handbook on Water Reuse, a practical guide designed to help municipalities, industries, farmers, and other stakeholders make water reuse a viable part of their operations. Water scarcity and climate change are creating growing pressure on how we manage water, our most vital resource. Smarter ways of using and reusing water are part of the solution. Centrum Balticum is a project partner responsible for communication, helping to share the project’s results and raise awareness about sustainable water management.

What the Handbook offers

The Handbook gathers insights from experts, practitioners, and p

olicy actors across the Baltic Sea Region. It translates research and pilot project experiences into hands-on solutions and tools that support real-life implementation.

It provides:

  • Practical strategies for managing water reuse safely and efficiently.
  • Best practices and lessons learned from ReNutriWater pilot projects.
  • An overview of legal frameworks and governance models supporting water reuse.
  • Research findings on key technologies, such as disinfection methods, nutrient recovery and applications in greenhouse cultivation
  • The WaterSafe Tool – a decision-support system that helps users choose the most suitable water treatment technology and manage water on local and regional levels.
  • Guidance for risk assessment and sustainable business models tailored to the water sector.
  • Communication and awareness-raising recommendations for engaging stakeholders and promoting water reuse effectively.

Why it matters

The Handbook demonstrates how water reuse can help tackle global water stress while also protecting ecosystems and supporting the circular economy. It turns knowledge from research and pilot testing into actionable strategies that can be applied in diverse contexts, from local communities to regional authorities.

By offering practical examples and ready-to-use tools, the publication encourages collaboration and innovation across Europe and beyond.
