The role of Centrum Balticum in the project: Centrum Balticum was responsible in the project for the Joint Platform for Decision-Makers and Experts work package. The aim of the work package was to increase dialogue among public officials, politicians, organizations, and researchers in order to enhance water protection in the Baltic Sea. Centrum Balticum organized training seminars and study visits within the project.

Project description:

Cities for a Healthier Sea supported municipalities in improving the condition of the Baltic Sea and local waters through voluntary water protection measures. The project encouraged cooperation between cities, researchers and local stakeholders and promoted practical solutions for reducing nutrient loading and eutrophication. By providing tools, knowledge and action plans, the project helped municipalities integrate water protection into planning and decision-making while raising public awareness of Baltic Sea issues.

Objectives:

  • Improve the condition of coastal waters and the Baltic Sea through voluntary water protection measures at the municipal level.
  • Increase awareness and engagement among municipalities, NGOs, schools and citizens in protecting the Baltic Sea.
  • Strengthen dialogue and knowledge exchange between civil servants, researchers, politicians and other stakeholders.

Key actions & results:

  • Organised training seminars, exchanges and stakeholder meetings to support municipalities in implementing water protection measures.
  • Developed tools and action plans to help cities integrate water protection into local planning and investment decisions.
  • Strengthened cooperation networks and contributed to the expansion of the Baltic Sea Challenge initiative promoting concrete actions for the Baltic Sea.
